​World Leadership Foundation Community Projects

The following are projects funded by donations raised by students with World Leadership School and administered by World Leadership Foundation. Our travel programs are rooted in responsible and sustainable community engagement theory. We have studied different equitable and sustainable approaches to community engagement and it guides why and how we interact with our partners. Engagement happens at WLS through partnerships with local communities. These partnerships between schools, local NGOs, and local communities are created within the context of their journeys – this is what we call “walking together.” Our activities and experiences are determined by the community itself. These partnerships look different depending on each community. Our program budget is determined by our community leaders and coordinators and goes directly to the local organizations, projects, and initiatives we work with and learn from.

2023 

• In Chilamate, Costa Rica, Packer Collegiate Institute, Trevor Day School, Crescent School, Agnes Irwin School, Colorado Academy, Marin Montessori School, Menlo School, Seven Peaks School, Pace Academy, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Holton-Arms School, Miss Porter’s School, Calvert School, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Miami Country Day School contributed $10,800 and engaged in work with the following organizations: 
  • Reserve Lapa Verde: A project focused on ecological investigation, where students collaborate and complete activities like bird counting, time-lapse photography, and monitoring of local mammals. 
  • Finca Organica: An organic farm based in el Paraiso, where students learn about the production of pepper, and vanilla and also take part in a reforestation project. 
  • Linda Vista Elementary School: Students visit schools in the area and have the opportunity to support English and art classes as well as small gardening projects on school grounds. 
• In Santa Maria de Dota, Costa Rica, Packer Collegiate Institute, French American International School, Loomis-Chaffee School, Green Hedges School, Phoenix Country Day School, Norfolk Academy, Nightingale-Bamford School, and Trinity Hall contributed $7,800 and engaged in work with the following organizations:
  • Asociación Doteña de Protección al Anciano: students engaged with residents at a local elderly care facility to practice Spanish and contribute to gardening initiatives.
  • San Martín Elementary School and Cedral Elementary School: during school visits, students get to see how the education system works in Costa Rica while engaging in classes and discussions with teachers and students.
  • Finca Agroecológica SunValley: This organic farm works on contributing to the preservation of biodiversity in the region and students get to see how local leaders are working to have an impact on their communities. 
• In San Ignacio, Belize, Montessori Academy of Colorado, French American International School, Epiphany School of Global Studies, Charlotte Latin School, and Holton-Arms School contributed $14,750 and partnered with the Howard Smith Elementary School. Students supported ongoing construction projects to expand the school to support more students including learning how to measure and mix cement, paint windows, and the garden. They also attended classes, played games, and learned about the Belizean education system.
• In Asni, Morocco, French American International School, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Lincoln School, &  Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School raised $2,600 to support recovery efforts following the severe earthquake that struck in western Morocco in September 2023.
• In Ceiba, Puerto Rico, Pingry School, Westover School, Nobles & Greenough School, Calvert School, Eastside Preparatory School, and Lincoln School contributed $8,000 to and engaged in work with Alianza Pro Desarrollo Económico de Ceiba (APRODEC) and Center for Research and Restoration of Marine Organisms (CIROM). Students get a unique glimpse into this center that educates its visitors on the stories and history of the native Taíno populations who were on the island prior to the arrival of the US and learned from local experts about the work being done with land-based marine nurseries.
• In Kibera, Kenya, Chapin School spent time with students from the Kibera School for Girls and learned about the work of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). 
• In Cochiti, New Mexico, Hillbrook School, San Francisco Day School, Seven Peaks, Summit Charter Middle School and Calvert School contributed $10,800 to Cochiti School, the Keres Children's Learning Center, and the Cochiti Pueblo. Students supported the construction of an outdoor eating area and kitchen at the school along with the construction of several traditional horno (ovens) for the pueblo.
• In Athens, Greece students from Chapin School learned about the work of organizations supporting refugees and resettlement. They learned about the work of SolidarityNow - Athens Solidarity Center, Melissa Network, Médecins du and Monde – Greece (MdM-Greece). 

2022

• In Santa Maria de Dota, Costa Rica, AIM Academy contributed $6,400 and engaged in work with Asociación Doteña de Protección al Anciano, San Martín Elementary School, Cedral Elementary School, and Finca Agroecológica SunValley.  During these visits, students got to see how the education system works in Costa Rica while engaging in classes and discussions with teachers and students. They visited an organic farm that works on contributing to the preservation of biodiversity in the region. 
• In Chilamate, Costa Rica, Steamboat Mountain School, Montclair Kimberley Academy, and Miss Porter’s School contributed $4,000 and engaged in work with Reserve Lapa Verde, a project focused on ecological investigation, where students collaborate and complete activities like bird counting, time-lapse photography, and monitoring of local mammals. • In Puerto Maldonado, Peru students from Pacific Ridge School contributed $3,000 and partnered with Nueva Semilla, an NGO supporting neglected and orphaned children and Amazon Shelter, an environmental center for rescued rainforest animals. 

2021

• As part of their Global Health Fellows program students from Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, VA partnered with health-based organizations on the Eastern Shore of Virginia to explore how rural communities are tackling health-related issues. 
• As part of the Chesapeake Bay Fellows program students from Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, VA partnered with environmental-focused organizations working to protect the Bay on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland. 
• Students from Emerald Mountain School in Steamboat, Colorado partnered with the research scientists at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory and various organizations in Southern Colorado and New Mexico to explore the ways local organizations are tackling environmental issues impacting their communities. 
• Students from Ensworth School in Nashville, TN partnered with various organizations in Southern Colorado and New Mexico to explore the ways local organizations are tackling environmental issues impacting their communities.  

2020
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all global travel programs were canceled. In collaboration with partner schools and instructors, WLS made over $17,000 direct payments to WLS coordinators, host communities, host families and NGO partners. 

2019
Costa Rica

• Students from Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, NY raised $3,000 to support their partner schools, Linda Vista School and Chilamate Elementary School. At Linda Vista School they worked with the community members to paint a fence, fill planter beds with soil to plant vegetables in the school garden, and fix and repaint the playground. At Chilamate, their donation went towards buying fans for the classroom and building an outdoor seating area for the students, which they painted. http://berkeleycarroll2019.weebly.com/blog

• Students from Rolling Hills Prep in San Pedro, CA raised $1,600 to support their community partner, Chilamate Elementary School. The school needed to have several trees taken down because they were causing damage to the school and posing a safety threat to the students. The RHP students helped haul, organize, and inventory the wood, as well as repaint parts of the playground and install a ping pong table for the students. • Students from Pace Academy in Atlanta, GA donated $3,000 to their partner school, Chilamate Elementary School. Their donations were invested in a new wall along the side of the school, painting and fixing the playground, installing new backboards for the basketball nets, and other general maintenance jobs around the school. The wall along the side of the school provides much-needed security during the evenings and weekends to avoid the loss of precious school resources. https://www.instagram.com/paceabroad/

• Students from Boulder, CO raised a total of $4,875 for their partner communities of El Paraíso and Rojo Maca. In El Paraíso, their funds were invested in making significant improvements to the church, one of the only communal areas in the community. In Rojo Maca, the donation went toward a covered walkway to the school’s bathroom, which will also serve as an outdoor auditorium for the students. http://wlsboulder.weebly.com/

• Students from Parish Episcopal in Dallas, TX donated $1,100 to their school partner in the community of Santa Maria de Dota. At the school, the students helped to repair, sand, and paint benches, converted tires into planters for a garden, and played soccer games and participated in lessons and art classes with the local students.They also planted bamboo trees to help alleviate flooding problems at the school. http://parish2019.weebly.com/blog

• Students from Trinity Hall School in New Jersey donated $400 to their school partner in the community of Santa Maria de Dota. The students contributed by helping in the school’s garden, building stairs, and cleaning and painting tires to use as planters. They also planted oak trees in the community to offset the carbon footprint caused by traveling and used recycled materials to do art projects with the local students. http://trinityhall2019.weebly.com/blog.

• Students from Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, CT donated $1,500 to their partner school in Dos Brazos del Río Tigre. The students worked on gardening at the school, specifically removing weeds to encourage the growth of hibiscus plants forming a natural fence for the school. They also spent time with the Osa Conservation Project, where they learned about conservation and biodiversity on the Osa Peninsula, released turtle hatchlings to the sea, and planted trees to offset the carbon footprint of their travel. http://greenwichacademy.weebly.com/blog1

Morocco

• Students from Awty International School in Houston, TX donated $1,400 to their community partner, the village of Tizi-Zogaght. The community-led initiative was to build a fence around the water reservoir, to protect the water from environmental pollutants and protect the village’s children, who often played and swam in the water. This project also helped to protect almond trees surrounding the reservoir from goals and other animals.

• Students from Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, TX donated $2,960 to their community partner, the village of Tizi-Zogaght. They supported an initiative to build and maintain a water canal between a reservoir in the middle of the village to the mosque and irrigation fields. Parish supported this 3-month project, which now allows for the sustainable irrigation of walnut and almond trees that provide income to the community. http://parish2019.weebly.com/blog4

Belize

• Students from La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, CA raised $5,750 for their partner school, Howard Smith School. They supported the installation of a basketball court at the school and spent time in the classrooms with the local students, playing games, building relationships, and learning about the differences between education in Belize and California. https://lajollacountrydayschool.weebly.com/blo

• Students from The Epiphany School of Global Studies in New Bern, NC raised $3,000 for their partner school, Howard Smith School. They continued an initiative they contributed to in 2018, assisting in the building of a basketball court for the school. They also had opportunities to attend classes with the students, play games, and learn about the Belizean education system.

• Students from Holton-Arms School and Landon School in Bethesda, MD raised $4,000 for their partner schools, Howard Smith School and Bishop Martin School. At Howard Smith School, they contributed to a larger project to build a basketball court for the school. At Bishop Martin, they used the funds to build a fence around the perimeter of the school, which will protect the students and school grounds. At both schools they had opportunities to build relationships, play games, participate in lessons, and learn alongside their Belizean peers.

• Students from St. Catherine’s School and St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, VA partnered with Calla Creek School for the first time this year. Their project was part of a larger effort involving multiple schools in 2019 to replace the school’s ceiling, which had rotted and was creating an unsafe environment for the students. The students also participated in other school improvement initiatives, including painting and cleaning up the school grounds and building relationships with the local students. http://stcatherineswls.weebly.com/blog1

• Students from Stuart Country Day School raised $2,500 to support their partner school, Calla Creek School. Their donation went toward the construction of a new office at the school, and they also worked with the local students on improvements to the school’s library. • Students from Awty International School in Houston, TX donated $1,500 to their partner school in the community of Maya Mopan. They helped to finish a fence surrounding the school, which included sealing the bottom with cement and installing gate to allow easy access to the school. They also participated in other school improvement projects, including painting, cleaning up the grounds, and participating in classes with the local students.

Cuba

• Students from Lincoln School in Providence, RI traveled to Cuba, where they completed art projects alongside local students in partnership with the Experimental Center for Visual Arts “José Antonio Díaz Peláez”, participated in gardening and pottery with the Cultural Project “Patio de Pelegrín”, and did a music workshop with the Clave de Sol Vocal & Orquesta de Guitarras. http://lincolnschool2019.weebly.com/blog1

• Students from Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ traveled to Havana and Viñales, Cuba. They participated in the “Patio de Pelegrin” Cultural Project, which aims to bring a sense of culture and community to an area in which it was previously lacking. They also learned to transcend language barriers through music with the Clave de Sol Vocal & Orquesta de Guitarras, and participated in other cultural activities with local students. http://blair2019.weebly.com/blog1

New Mexico

• Students from San Francisco Day School raised $4,400 for their partners at Cochiti Middle School in the Cochiti Pueblo of New Mexico. The SFDS students worked on projects alongside Cochiti students at their campus: improving the school’s playground, painting, and playing games. Their donation also contributed to building a gazebo at the Cochiti Pueblo welcome center.

Tanzania

• Students from Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, NY partnered with students at G/Arusha Secondary School to learn, play, and grow together throughout the course of the program. They participated in scavenger hunts and teamwork challenges, went on a safari, and took Kiswahili classes together. The Berkeley Carroll students also raised $3,000 to support TeachUNITED initiatives at G/Arusha. https://bcstanzania2019.weebly.com
• Students from Awty International School in Houston, TX raised $1,800 for their partner school, Banjika Secondary School. They worked with local construction workers to build tables for the school’s biology lab, took Kiswahili classes, and participated in leadership activities with their Tanzania student partners.
• Students from Menlo School in Atherton, CA spent three weeks working alongside students at their partner school, Banjika Secondary School. They partook in leadership training and activities with their Tanzanian peers, participated in a collective project to build an incinerator for the girls’ dormitory, took Kiswahili classes, and bonded through songs, dance, and games. https://menloabroadtanzania.blogspot.com/

Peru

• Students from Georgetown Visitation in Washington, D.C. contributed $2,610 to support their NGO partners in Peru, Sacred Valley Health and Kuska School. At Sacred Valley Health they learned about the importance of access to health care in rural areas and participated in a Wilderness First Aid training. At Kuska they participated in various school improvement projects, including building a sunroof, organizing school supplies, doing recycled art projects, and playing games with the students. http://visitation2019.weebly.com/blog2
• Students from Ensworth School in Nashville, TN contributed $1,150 to support their partner school, Piscacucho School. This donation assisted with the school’s security and maintenance, including making some improvements to the kitchen, painting the tables, benches, and some rocks around the schoolyard, and weeding and maintaining the gardens, among other small projects. The students also played games with and prepared English lessons for the students. • Students from Vail Mountain School in Vail, CO donated $665 to their community partners in the Sacred Valley region of Peru, Sacred Valley Health and Awamaki Weaving Cooperative. In addition to learning from and volunteering with these NGOs, they built relationships with their homestay families, participated in a despacho ceremony with a local Quechua shaman, and played soccer games with local students. http://vailmountainschool.weebly.com/blog
• Students from Awty International School in Houston, TX donated $1,685 to support their NGO partners in Ollantaytambo, Sacred Valley Health and Kuska School. At Sacred Valley Health they learned about the importance of access to health care in rural areas and participated in a Wilderness First Aid training, and at Kuska School they contributed to school improvement projects, including painting the library and cleaning up the school grounds.
• Students from Aspen Country Day School in Aspen, CO raised $8,291 to continue their multi-year project of supporting the building of a multi-use cafeteria at Manco Inca School, a primary school that serves children in Ollantaytambo between the ages of 3-13. This year, the students helped in laying all of the tile for the floor and finished putting blocks onto the facade of cafeteria. They also participated in a recycling project during a festival in Ollantaytambo and built relationships through games and art projects with the local students. https://aspencountrydayschool.weebly.com/
• Students from Gilman School and Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, MD raised $2,400 for their partner school in the community of Infierno, Colegio Bilingue de Shajao. They worked and learned alongside local students, building a sidewalk on the school grounds, sanding and painting bleachers, and beginning construction on a new classroom. • Students from Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, NY lived with homestay families in the communities of Ollantaytambo and Bandolista, learning from and volunteering with local NGOs. They partnered with Kuska School, Sacred Valley Health, and Awamaki Weaving Co-Operative to learn more about Peruvian culture and the socio-economic issues affecting the Sacred Valley region of Peru.
• Students from Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, NY contributed $1,600 to assist with community development initiatives in their host community of Infierno, in the Amazon region of Peru. They volunteered at the NGO Nueva Semilla, which provides housing and social services to orphaned and neglected children in the region, and they supported school improvement initiatives at the local school, Colegio Bilinque de Shajao. They also donated a ping pong table to the school, as the students are well known in the region for their ping pong skills.

India

• Students from Lincoln School in Providence, RI traveled to India to participate in a collaborative dance workshop with their partner community, Chinchoti. At the end of the program they performed a traditional Indian dance for their community and were able to participate in the Holi “Festival of Colors” during their time there. http://lincolnschool2019.weebly.com/blog
• Students from Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, NY traveled to India to participate in a collaborative dance workshop with their partner community, Heranjalu. They learned and practiced a traditional Indian dance that they performed for the community at the end of the program. Rwanda

• Students from Greens Farms Academy in Westport, CT traveled to Rwanda as part of an NGO partnership with IEE (Inspire, Educate, Empower), an NGO that provides innovative training to teachers and learners in Rwanda, and Komera, an organization that seeks to empower women through education, community development, and sport.

2018
Costa Rica

• Students from Calvert School in Baltimore, MD raised $2,000 for their partner school, Liceo El Paraíso. The Calvert students partnered with El Paraíso students to create a project about energy consumption and conservation in the local community. They interviewed community members, conducted surveys, and presented the results to the school. • Students from Landon School in Bethesda, MD donated $1,500 to the San Rafael School in Santa María de Dota, which they used to install a four-faucet drinking fountain. The students helped by digging out an area for the water pipes and drainage, and they also painted the base of the water fountain to prevent rust. They also learned about coffee production in Costa Rica, participated in a cooking class, and played soccer with local students. https://landoncostarica2018.wordpress.com/
• Students from Georgetown Visitation in Washington, D.C. raised $4,750 for the community of Dos Brazos del Río Tigre and the local school. They dug a trench around the school and planted bushes to serve as a natural fence for the school, and they also competed in soccer games with the local students, learned how to make empanadas and tortillas, and learned about Costa Rican culture from their homestay families. http://visitation2018.weebly.com/blog
• Students from Colorado Academy in Denver, CO donated $3,450 to their partner school, Liceo El Paraíso, to lay tile floors, paint the walls, and put the finishing touches on two new classrooms in the school. • Students from Spartanburg Day School in Spartanburg, SC raised $1,000 for their partner school, Chilamate Elementary School. • Students from Casey Middle School in Boulder, CO raised $2,300 for Liceo El Paraíso, which went towards purchasing windows for the two new classrooms at the school. The Casey students partnered with the Costa Rican students to interview community members and gather data about water conservation, then they compiled and analyzed the results and presented them to the school. http://caseymiddleschool2018.weebly.com/blog
• Students from The Pingry School in Basking Ridge, NJ donated $1,400 to San Rafael School in Santa María de Dota. They mixed, placed, and spread cement to create a ramp at the school, planted trees, and helped with English lessons. • Students from Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, CT donated $1,200 to the community of Dos Brazos del Río Tigre, where they dug trenches around the community’s Eco Cultural Community Hall and soccer field, and then planted hibiscus plants to serve as a natural fence around the space. Morocco

• Students from Ensworth School in Nashville, TN donated $2,350 for their partner school, Tizyane School, in the community of Asni. El Paso

• Students from Saint Gertrude High School in Richmond, VA traveled to El Paso, Texas where they met with border patrol agents, attended an immigration hearing at the U.S. District Court, heard stories from migrant farmworkers, and learned about the many sides of the immigration debate. http://stgertrudehs.weebly.com/blog
• Students from Wilmington Friends School in Wilmington, DE spent a week in El Paso learning about immigration on the U.S.-Mexico border and helping out at a summer camp at Cristo Rey Lutheran Church. Belize

• Students from Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, TX raised $2,750 for Howard Smith School, where they poured cement into the trench the previous school had dug to form the foundation for the basketball court. • Students from the Epiphany School of Global Studies in New Bern, NC raised $3,500 for their partner school, Howard Smith School. China

• Students from Rolling Hills Prep School in San Pedro, CA traveled to Xi’an, China, where they partnered with a local school and stayed with homestay families in the community of Gaoling. Cuba

• Students from Lincoln School in Providence, RI traveled to Cuba, where they completed art projects alongside local children in partnership with the Karacom Community Project, met with local community leaders, and participated in a dance workshop. http://lincolnschool2018.weebly.com/blog

New Mexico

• Students from San Francisco Day School raised $4,400 for their partners at Cochiti Middle School in the Cochiti Pueblo of New Mexico. The SFDS students w orked on projects alongside Cochiti students at their campus: planting new trees and plants in their garden, weeding and creating a small path for history classes in a nearby field, and building a gazebo. http://sfds2018.weebly.com/blog

Tanzania

• Students from The Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, NY raised $2,550 which they used to lay part of the foundation for the future community center building at Chilamate. • Students from Presbyterian Day School in Memphis, TN raised $3,000 which they used to work closely with the kindergarten at Chilamate Elementary School. • Students from the Holton Arms School in Bethesda, MD raised $2,000 to support the elementary school in el Paraiso, Sarapiqui, Costa Rica. • Students from St. Mary’s Academy in Denver, CO raised over $16,000 for their third visit to Ollantaytambo and they used $10,000 on two construction projects. First, they worked at Escuela Virgin de Fatima planting vegetables in the greenhouse and constructing games on the school grounds. • Students from The Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, NY and the Groton School in Groton, MA raised over $3,000 which they used to start building a library at the Oloika Primary School. Rwanda

• Students from the Holton Arms School in Bethesda, MD worked alongside students from the both the Gashora Girls’ Academy of Science and Technology and the Groupe Scolaire Dihiro in Gashora Sector, Bugesera District in Eastern Province to clear a site for a volleyball playground for the GS Dihiro. The students also spent time playing football together and engaging in a valuable cultural exchange.

Tanzania

• Students from Appleby College in Ontario, Canada worked at the Banjika Secondary School near Karatu, Tanzania building two classrooms. • Students from The Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, NY raised $2,500 and spent 4 days in the village of Chinchoti building clothes washing steps on the edge of the village lake. Before their arrival, there were only two steps built by villagers by donations from the temple and the people of Mumbai. As a result, women had to wait hours for their turn to wash their clothes. • Students from St. Mary’s Academy in Denver, CO, raised $4,000 to refurbish the middle school playground at Cochiti Elementary outside of Cochiti Pueblo, New Mexico. Improvements included weeding a one-acre parcel, painting and repairing a pavilion, planting a dozen trees, installing a drip irrigation system and replacing all basketball rims and hoops. Peru

• Students from the Groton School visited a community outside of Ollantaytambo, Peru — Ancopacha and raised over $5,000. • Students from the Lake Forest Academy continued work on the construction of a weaving center in the community of Patacancha in Peru. The students raised over $6,000 to help with this project!
• Students from the Ensworth School also continued their work this summer in Peru. They worked in a small community called Piscacucho and turned a classroom that was filled with beans into an area where students can learn and thrive. • Students from Groton School of Groton, MA, volunteered at an orphanage for Haitian children in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Haiti

• Faculty from a variety of schools in the United States traveled to Lafond, Haiti, to begin rebuilding a classroom block of Lafond School, which was destroyed in the January 2012 earthquake. • Students from Groton School in Groton, MA, helped build the foundation, cement slab and walls for a 2,200-square-foot dining hall in Oloika, a Masai village in southern Kenya.
